BACKGROUND

What are we trying to achieve?

Enhance the British Red Cross' early intervention strategy with young people to strengthen their awareness and capability to care for others and the society from an early age.

Attract young people to be engaged with the British Red Cross and retain involvement; making them be more likely to play a role in the organisation.

Our hypothesis

Young people who are more empathetic and humanitarian are more likely to volunteer.

Young people who are engaged in volunteering at an earlier age are more likely to develop long-term habits of engagement in volunteering.

INSIGHTS

Insights from research

Insight 1

Young people have the values and awareness to help others, but not strongly enough to motivate them to take the initiative.

Insight 2

Young people do not believe in their own abilities, but confidence can be built from very simple things with more experience.

Insight 3

Parents' involvement can be an opportunity to prompt children into action.

Insight 4

Create a more connected community by empowering children to care more about their community through activities.

Define

Problem statement

Young people's motivation and awareness of helping others are limited to the friendship groups but doesn't move into the wider community. Young people don't understand how they could use their capability to help others. Young people don't see the opportunity or feel desire to take the initiative and participate in volunteer.

Because of the heightened degree of safety required to supervised children of this age, the allocated staff and volunteers available to manage will cause human and financial challenge to the British Red Cross. That the main reasons why the British Red Cross is facing a shortage of young volunteers.

Mission statement

How might we help the British Red Cross develop more potential youth volunteers by involving parents to provide safe opportunities and to create a path help young people shift from awareness to engage in volunteer actions, so that to help children develop confidence, their own abilities and motivation to care for others?
