Context

Solo travel is an individual embarking on a journey alone or without familiar companions. Solo travel has indicated a significant shift in travel behaviour and embracing new experiences, as more and more people are interested in exploring solo travel. Whether it's the desire for personal growth, stepping out of their comfort zone, or simply the need for solitude.

With solo travel becoming a trend, whose solo trip aspirations haven’t been fulfilled?

  • 56.52% of mums give up solo travel after they become mums.
  • 55% of mums haven't travelled alone, but they strongly desire to it.

Insights

Why do moms need to travel alone?

  • Mum needs actual travel.

When mums travel with their families, it's not an actual holiday for them, they're just company in a different place.

“...Motherhood is exhausting and we all need a break. ”

“Mothers never actually go on holidays, they just parent in a different location....”

Why do they want to travel alone but haven't set off yet?

  • Mums face the conflict of “reconnecting with themselves” vs “absence from their family”

Mums usually prioritize their children's needs above their desires. Therefore, when they pursue their interests or personal growth, they experience a sense of guilt.

“... I wouldn't travel alone when I was a full-time mom because it would have been hard on the kids and I would have been stressed out.”

Opportunities & Value Proposition

OPPORTUNITIES

  1. The ritual of separation: Mums need to EXPLAIN to their kids. Mums have to be away and make children understand that this is something that mothers MUST do.
  2. Meaningful travel photos and souvenirs: Mums believe travel photos and souvenirs are a meaningful way to share their travel with children. And the kids love to hear about their mum's travel story.

VALUE PROPOSITION

Our service is dedicated to:

  • Helping mums who feel guilty about leaving their children by providing a child-friendly explanation for their absence.
  • Transforming mums’ solo travel experience into an exciting and understandable story for the child rather than just an absence.

How does our service work?

Based on our goals, the core of our service is helping to explain mum's absence to kids in a fun way.

Now, let's follow Mia and see how it works.

Business Model

In the first stage, our focus is on mums who want to travel alone but feel under pressure. Our core profit model is in-app purchases for tailored storybooks, additional stickers, storybook printing, and manual scriptwriting services.

We will allow mother and child product companies to advertise on our platform, generating additional revenue.
We will also work with travel agencies to cross-promote our services. They can recommend our service to solo travel mums, and we can feature their travel packages within our app. Additionally, we will reach our target audience through paid recommendations from popular solo traveling mums on social media.

Once we have established a customer base and gained recognition, we will expand our business by partnering with mums' employers. During prototype testing, we found that business-traveling mums also experience separation anxiety. Then our service is just as good for them. Employers can purchase our service coupons as part of their employee benefits program.
Additionally, some people who simply find it’s fun to create travel stories will also become our users, such as parents whose children enjoy picture books and mums who want to travel with their kids.
